Mya isn't the typical elementary school student. Recess for her isn't just an opportunity to run around outside, but a chance to connect with a student who she has never met.
Mya is a Junior Coach for Playworks Colorado at Marie L. Greenwood Academy. As a Junior Coach, she helps to create a safe space on the playground, connecting with students who are new to the school, or who may not have a strong group of friends.
"I like to see kids treating others with respect. One time on my recess shift, I saw a girl who was really lonely and a group of friends came and invited her to play and she seemed really happy about that. When we all treat each other with respect, we all have fun," Mya said.
Playworks Colorado works with schools to improve children’s physical health and social and emotional learning through recess.
Playworks Colorado currently serves 46,000 kids in 92 schools across the state. Their main areas of focus are safety, engagement and empowerment. By 2020, they hope to help 3.5 million kids in 7,000 elementary schools nationwide.
In order to help reach more children, the Playworks Colorado Annual Soirée for Play is fundraising to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.
The event is being held on March 14 at the Mile High Station. The event starts at 6 p.m. with a reception and games, followed by the awards and an afterparty.
Tickets start at $100 and increase depending on the level of sponsorship.
